Considering A Doula?

371

Do you wish to have a doula present during your birthing experience? Dr. Campbell is happy to accommodate any patient who wishes to have one. A doula can be a valuable resource to have during pregnancy, labor and delivery. A doula generally meets the mother-to-be a few months before her due date and practices non medical techniques that help manage pain.

A doula refers to a woman who is professionally trained to provide labor support, but who does not perform clinical tasks. Doulas are often referred to as:

  • labor support professional
  • labor support specialist
  • labor attendant
  • labor companion

She is sometimes called a “birth doula,” to distinguish her from a “postpartum doula” – who provides care to the mother and her newborn after the birth. Many professionals in this role are both.

The Benefits of Choosing a Doula

The doula’s role is to provide continuous support and a reassuring presence to a laboring woman. A mother-to-be often finds comfort in knowing that her doula is going to be with her through the duration of her labor and delivery.

A doula does not have any medical or decision making responsibility, but is able to provide support for the non medical needs of her patient. Non medical needs may include:

  • birthing ball coaching
  • counter pressure for back labor
  • relaxation techniques
  • massage with or without essential oils
  • acupressure points
  • concentrated rhythmic breathing patterns as taught in Lamaze Natural Childbirth
  • general help for the mother-to-be when assuming new more comfortable positions

At New River Women’s Health we encourage and empower women to choose a birth plan that feels the most comfortable to them. If your birth plan includes support from a holistic provider, Dr. Campbell will work with her as a team member, and maintain open communication. Our goal at New River Women’s Health is to help you achieve your best possible birth experience.
