The reality is that unless you’ve formed an intentional social distancing pod with other families, most traditional trick-or-treat, trunk-or-treat, or Halloween carnival style events are not an option. Celebrate a Virtual Halloween 2020 in KC
Let your kiddos know there are several fun, virtual, and socially safe ideas for the family to choose from. Here are five of our suggestions for how to have a fun, virtual Halloween with costumes and spirits intact!

1. Country Music Hall of Fame’s “Spooky Story Time”
From 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. on 10/31, the Country Music Hall of Fame is hosting a Spooky Story Time and a craft project where kids can make “creepy castanets.” And, of course, the event wouldn’t be complete without some live hootenanny style music.
While the event is completely free, it does require registration beforehand, so Click Here to get that taken care of. Then, we recommend investing in some ear plugs for the older members in the family in case those Creepy Castanets become a favorite noise maker for the rest of the day…
2. Friday Night Family Fun: KC Public Library Boo Bash
If you’ve ever attended the KC Public Library’s halloween-themed events, you know how fun they can be. However, their creative staff have taken all that fun and rolled it into a Friday Night Family Fun Boo Bash, taking place on Friday, 10/30.
Librarians and the participating members of the community will all Boo Bash together in costume – dancing, costume parading, and listening to Halloween Stories. Click Here to register. They’ll send you a link to the event.
3. Villains Virtual Halloween Tea
Have you ever thought you’d have tea with a famous villain? Well, now’s your chance to do just that. Traditionally, the creative and theatrical heroes and villains from Occasions with Characters host a Halloween Ball. Since this year’s ball had to be canceled, Occasions with Characters is hosting a Villains VIrtual Halloween Tea instead.
Once you and your children log in to the Zoom-based event (aka, “The Magic Mirror), they’ll get to show off their costumes – and enjoy tea – with the Horned Sorceress, Fur Fashionista, Vain Queen, Queen of Cards and the Stepsisters. The event is free, but parents do need to register to get the link – only one ticket needed per household.
4. Mad Science Halloween Show
The Midcontinent Public Library is hosting a Mad Science Halloween Show from 4:00 to 5:00 on Wednesday, 10/28. Registration opportunities expire 30 minutes before the show begins to register now to make sure you have your link reserved.
The fun-filled show will be filled with Halloween characters, witches brew, fog droplets, and electrical experiments. It is sure to be un-BOO-lievable! Click Here to register.
5. Geo-Caching Trick or Treating
Need to get out and about, but want to do it safely? The Johnson County Parks & Rec have put together a Geo-Caching “Trick or Treating” experience, designed to keep your family socially-distant and safe from others while having a whole new kind of experience.
Search for caches hidden around Antioch Park using Global Positioning Systems (GPS). GPS units, a tutorial, and a meal are included during this modern day scavenger hunt. Children under 16 years of age must be accompanied by an adult. Participants registering as a family will be loaned one GPS unit per family. Costumes are encouraged! Tickets include a hot dog dinner and s’mores.
It’s not easy having to change traditions, plan new ways of celebrating familiar holidays, or let go of the “social norms” we’re used to. However, Kansas City community organizations have gone the extra mile to provide virtual and socially-distant activities to ensure your family can still have fun.
