There are vacations where the hotel is simply where you sleep, and then there are vacations where you start seriously considering whether leaving the property is necessary at all. I have a great deal of respect for sightseeing, but if someone has gone to the trouble of providing me with a private infinity pool, a spectacular Caribbean view, and someone else to worry about the details, I am perfectly capable of reconsidering my itinerary.

For a special birthday, milestone anniversary, girls’ trip, multigenerational family vacation, or simply one of those occasions when you decide you have earned something fabulous, renting a luxury villa can completely change the way you travel. Instead of several hotel rooms scattered down a hallway, everyone gets actual living space, private bedrooms, kitchens, pools and, in some cases, a level of service that makes returning to normal life slightly depressing.

These five properties in Mexico and the Caribbean take the idea of a vacation rental several rather glamorous steps further.

Clevelander, Turks and Caicos

6 bedrooms | 7 bathrooms | Sleeps up to 14 | From $6,500 per night

If your idea of vacation involves waking up beside one of the Caribbean’s famously beautiful beaches, Clevelander makes a compelling argument for Turks and Caicos.

Located beside Long Bay Beach on Providenciales, this contemporary six-bedroom villa accommodates up to 14 guests. It was built in 2018 and has open-plan living areas spread over two floors, along with a pool, gym and private tennis court.

Current rates listed by onefinestay start at $6,500 per night before taxes and fees.

This is the sort of property that makes sense for a large family gathering because people can actually do different things. Some can play tennis, others can spend the afternoon around the pool, and the person who announced she was going to “read quietly on the beach” can disappear with a book and resurface at cocktail hour. Everyone wins.

Long Bay Beach is right outside, so this is also a good choice for travelers who don’t want to rent a gorgeous Caribbean villa only to discover that getting to the Caribbean requires getting into a car.

When you divide the cost among several couples or families, large villas like this can also become more interesting from a value perspective. No one is going to mistake $6,500 a night for a bargain, but luxury travel math has always been its own branch of mathematics.

Best for: Multigenerational trips, milestone birthdays and groups that want plenty of activities without sacrificing beachfront access.

Zenaida Estate, Anguilla

3 to 7 bedrooms | 7 bathrooms | Sleeps 6 to 14 | From $1,200 per night

Anguilla has long been one of my favorite kinds of Caribbean destinations: beautiful beaches, excellent restaurants and a decidedly more relaxed atmosphere. Zenaida Estate takes advantage of that setting from its hillside location above Sandy Hill Bay.

The estate can be configured with three to seven bedrooms and accommodates six to 14 guests, making it unusually flexible for groups.

It has seven bathrooms, an infinity pool, hot tub, gym and tennis court, with current rates starting at $1,200 per night for the three-bedroom configuration.

The property is spread across an estate overlooking the Caribbean, with expansive spaces designed for indoor-outdoor living. It’s a particularly attractive setup when you’re traveling with extended family or several couples because everyone doesn’t have to occupy the exact same space every waking moment. I love my friends and family dearly. I also believe separate living areas have probably saved many otherwise perfectly good vacations.

There is plenty here to keep active travelers occupied, but Zenaida also works beautifully for people whose primary vacation goal is to stop being productive.

A sea-view infinity pool and hot tub tend to make a compelling case for doing absolutely nothing.

Best for: Extended families, groups of friends and travelers who want privacy and room to spread out.

Ocean Point Residences at Windjammer Landing, St. Lucia

2 or 3 bedrooms | Private pool | Butler service

Windjammer Landing Resort & Residences offers something a little different from a stand-alone private villa. Its Ocean Point Residences give you much of the privacy and space of villa living while keeping the amenities of a full luxury resort within reach.

Set on St. Lucia’s northwest coast at Labrelotte Bay, the resort occupies 60 acres and has access to 64,000 square feet of white-sand beachfront.

Guests can use six resort pools, seven dining venues, a spa, kids’ club and numerous water and land activities.

The two- and three-bedroom Ocean Point Residences feature floor-to-ceiling windows, large terraces, private infinity pools, chef-inspired kitchens and personalized butler service. This is what I would call having your cake and asking the butler whether someone could possibly bring a fork.

The combination is especially useful for multigenerational travel. You can gather everyone in a spacious residence rather than separate hotel rooms, but there are restaurants, children’s activities, watersports and multiple pools available when everyone wants to go their own way.

And yes, having your own infinity pool when the resort already has six pools sounds excessive. That’s rather the point.

Best for: Families and groups who want villa privacy without giving up resort restaurants, activities, spa services and children’s programming.

Celestial Villa at The Tryall Club, Jamaica

6 bedrooms | Sleeps 10 | 7 household staff | From $2,821 per night

Then there is Celestial Villa at The Tryall Club, where the word “vacation” begins to feel inadequate.

Set high on Garden Hill, Celestial is a six-bedroom luxury villa accommodating up to 10 guests.

The Tryall Club currently lists the property with seven household staff and rates beginning at $2,821 per night.

Its elevated position is one of the biggest draws, with sweeping views over the Caribbean and the surrounding Tryall property. This is a villa designed for lingering: long breakfasts, afternoon swims, drinks before dinner and the inevitable conversation about why none of us thought to acquire a Jamaican villa earlier in life.

What really changes the experience, however, is the dedicated household staff. A beautiful house is lovely. A beautiful house where someone else is taking care of many of the things you normally spend your day thinking about is considerably lovelier.

The Tryall Club itself adds another layer to the trip, particularly for travelers who want the privacy of a villa but appreciate having the facilities and activities of an established resort community nearby.

Best for: Big celebrations, luxury girls’ trips and family gatherings where you want the experience to feel genuinely special.

Cayo Espanto, Belize

Private island | 7 villas | Personal house staff | Accessible by boat from San Pedro

If privacy is your definition of luxury, Cayo Espanto may ruin ordinary vacations for you.

Located about three miles off the coast of San Pedro, Belize, this private-island resort has just seven villas, which means you’re not exactly fighting for a lounge chair or wondering who invited 200 strangers to your peaceful Caribbean escape.

Each villa has its own waterfront setting, and accommodations range from one-bedroom villas to the two-bedroom Casa Estrella. Several feature private plunge pools, and the overwater Casa Ventanas sits at the end of its own dock with Caribbean water surrounding it. Guests also have a personal house staff, and meals are customized around individual preferences rather than dictated by a traditional restaurant menu.

The experience here is intentionally private and personalized. Cayo Espanto arranges transportation to the island by boat from San Pedro, and once you arrive, activities can include snorkeling, diving, fishing, sailing and excursions to explore Belize.

Of course, you can also remain firmly planted beside your pool while gazing at the Caribbean. I support cultural enrichment, but I also know when a chaise lounge has my name on it.

What makes Cayo Espanto particularly interesting for a milestone trip is that you can reserve an individual villa or, for the ultimate splurge, buy out the entire island. A full-island takeover accommodates up to 18 guests across the seven villas. That could make an extraordinary setting for a major birthday, anniversary, family celebration or girls’ trip where someone has decided that turning 60 deserves considerably more fanfare than dinner and a cake.

There is also something wonderfully appealing about the scale of Cayo Espanto.

Plenty of luxury resorts offer beautiful rooms and excellent service, but having only a handful of villas on a private island creates a completely different experience. It’s less “we’re staying at a resort” and considerably more “apparently we own an island this week.” No need to correct anyone who gets that impression.

Best for: Milestone birthdays, anniversaries, romantic escapes and once-in-a-lifetime group trips where privacy is the ultimate luxury.

The New Luxury Vacation May Be a Villa

Private villas offer something that’s increasingly difficult to find even at excellent resorts: space. You aren’t confined to a hotel room when you want privacy, and you aren’t required to meet everyone in the lobby every time you want to have a glass of wine together.

For women traveling with grown children, grandchildren, couples or a group of longtime friends, that can make an enormous difference. You can spend the morning together, disappear for a few hours, meet around the pool later, and have dinner without coordinating six separate room numbers.

Of course, none of these properties qualifies as an inexpensive getaway, nor are they pretending to.

They’re the places you consider when the trip itself is the celebration, and when you’d rather spend money on an extraordinary shared experience than another thing destined to eventually occupy a closet.

And if that experience happens to include a private beach, an infinity pool, and someone else making the bed, I see absolutely no reason to object.
