Do You Have a Birth Plan?

372

If you have been pregnant for more than a month or two, chances are that friends and family members are asking you about your birth plan. Do you have one? It’s important that you develop some idea of your desires and expectations once your delivery day arrives. It is equally important to stay flexible with your plan, as things may not always go exactly how you expect. However, birth plans are still very useful in a delivery setting, even if you are preparing for the unexpected.

Developing the Plan

Creating your birth plan is a process that should take your entire pregnancy. As such, you will start out with a few ideas that may change by the time you are ready to deliver. During your regular maternity checkups, feel free to ask us for recommendations regarding typical deliveries. We can even arrange for a tour of the hospital’s maternity and post-partum departments. As the months progress, write down questions you have for Dr. Campbell, so you remember to ask them. Then you can continue to revise your plan as you get new information regarding your pregnancy and hospital procedures.

Surprising Circumstances

Sometimes your pregnancy or your delivery ends with quite a few surprises. Remember that, first and foremost, we always work toward a healthy pregnancy and delivery for both mother and baby. If you keep that in mind, you can work with your OB to manage unexpected complications in a way that satisfies both parties.

Pregnancy is exciting enough without having to wonder how your labor and delivery will go. But, you can improve your experience by planning ahead. With a sensible birth plan, you will help your doctor and support staff know your wishes, with enough flexibility to handle whatever life throws at you. For all your questions about birth plans and other concerns related to your pregnancy, feel free to schedule an appointment with Dr. Campbell. We can’t wait to see you!
