Fashion Over 50: The Complete Guide to Looking Stylish at Any Age – Prime Women

Getting dressed after 50 can be a strange experience. You know your style better than you ever have, you probably have a much better idea of what you’re willing to spend, and you’ve finally stopped buying things simply because everyone else is wearing them.

And yet, shopping can somehow feel harder.

Your body may not be exactly the same as it was 20 years ago. Your lifestyle may have changed. Some of the stores you once loved suddenly seem to be selling either crop tops or clothing that looks like you’re headed to a retirement community talent show.

There doesn’t appear to be nearly enough in between.

That’s where we come in.

Fashion after 50 isn’t about dressing younger, hiding your body, or following a list of ridiculous rules about what women of a certain age should no longer wear. It’s about understanding what looks good on the body you have now, building a wardrobe that works for your life, and knowing when a trend is worth trying and when it deserves to stay on the mannequin.

Consider this your starting point for everything fashion after 50, from finding fabulous jeans and flattering dresses to dressing different body shapes, choosing shoes you can actually walk in, updating wardrobe basics, and incorporating trends without looking like you’re trying too hard.

Because style doesn’t have an expiration date.

How Should Women Dress After 50?

Let’s get one thing out of the way first: there isn’t a uniform. You don’t suddenly need to surrender your leather jacket, jeans, sleeveless tops, heels, prints, or anything else simply because you’ve celebrated your 50th birthday.

What often changes is how we wear things.

Fit becomes more important. Fabric becomes more important.

Proportion becomes more important. And increasingly, comfort matters too.

That doesn’t mean elastic-waist pants and orthopedic shoes are your destiny. It simply means many of us are no longer willing to spend eight hours wearing something that pinches, scratches, slides down, rides up, or requires us to stop breathing after lunch.

The sweet spot is clothing that makes you feel current and confident while still feeling like yourself.

Build Your Wardrobe Around Great Basics

Trends are fun, but basics do most of the work in a wardrobe.

A great pair of jeans, flattering trousers, crisp shirts, quality T-shirts, versatile dresses, a blazer, comfortable shoes, and a few excellent layering pieces can create dozens of outfits before you’ve purchased a single trendy item.

The trick is periodically reevaluating your basics.

The black pants that were perfect ten years ago may not have the rise or silhouette you prefer today.

Your favorite white blouse may technically still fit but no longer fall quite the way you’d like. And that blazer you’ve been hanging onto since 2008 has served its country admirably.

You don’t need to replace your entire closet every season. Look for the pieces you reach for constantly and upgrade those first.

Finding the Best Jeans After 50

Few items inspire more dressing-room frustration than jeans.

The good news is that denim options have expanded enormously. Straight-leg, bootcut, wide-leg, flare, slim, cropped, trouser-style, high-rise, mid-rise, stretch and rigid denim all have a place.

Forget the idea that there is one “best” jean for women over 50.

The best jeans are the ones that flatter your particular proportions.

Pay attention to the rise, where the waistband hits, the length, pocket placement, stretch and what happens to the jeans after you’ve worn them for two hours. A pair that looks fantastic in the dressing room but grows two sizes by dinner isn’t particularly fantastic.

And don’t be afraid to have jeans altered. We happily pay to tailor formal clothing but somehow expect a mass-produced $100 pair of jeans to magically fit our exact waist, hips, thighs and inseam.

Sometimes the difference between okay jeans and fabulous jeans is a $20 alteration.

Dresses After 50

A great dress may be the easiest piece of clothing you own.

One garment, a pair of shoes, a few accessories, and you’re dressed. No standing in front of the mirror wondering whether your blouse works with your pants while your dinner reservation gets increasingly closer.

The most flattering dress isn’t determined by your age.

It’s determined by your proportions.

Wrap dresses can create definition at the waist. Shirt dresses can provide structure. A-line silhouettes can skim the hips. Column dresses create a longer line, while fit-and-flare shapes can emphasize the waist.

Sleeve length, neckline and hemline can also dramatically change how a dress feels.

Most importantly, don’t limit yourself to the sad little section labeled “mature women’s dresses.” Shop by silhouette, fit and occasion instead.

Dressing the Body You Have Now

Bodies change.

That’s hardly breaking news to any woman over 50. Menopause, weight changes, gravity and plain old genetics can redistribute things in ways we did not specifically request.

The answer isn’t to hide your entire body beneath oversized clothing. In fact, clothing that’s too large can sometimes make you appear larger because your shape disappears completely. Instead, look for clothing that follows your body without clinging to every inch of it.

Think about proportion.

If you’re wearing a loose, voluminous top, try pairing it with a cleaner silhouette on the bottom. Wide-leg trousers often look best with a more defined top or strategically tucked shirt. A long tunic may benefit from a slimmer pant.

Your goal isn’t to disguise yourself. It’s to create balance.

What If You Carry Weight Around Your Middle?

This is one of the most common fit frustrations after menopause.

If your waist isn’t as defined as it once was, you don’t have to spend the rest of your life wearing tents.

Look for garments that skim rather than squeeze. Strategic draping, open jackets, longer necklaces, vertical lines and thoughtfully placed structure can help create a longer visual line.

Where a top ends matters too. A shirt that stops at the widest part of your torso may emphasize exactly what you’re trying not to emphasize.

Experiment with different lengths, partial tucks and layers until you find proportions that work for you.

And please don’t buy something two sizes too large because you’re trying to conceal your stomach. Usually, you’re just concealing everything else along with it.

The Right Undergarments Can Change an Outfit

Before deciding a dress or blouse doesn’t flatter you, consider what’s underneath it.

A well-fitting bra can completely change where clothing falls on the body.

In fact, if you haven’t been professionally fitted in years, your bra size may surprise you.

The same applies to underwear and shapewear.

Shapewear is optional, not mandatory. Sometimes you want everything smoothed out under a fitted dress. Other days you would like your internal organs to remain exactly where nature placed them.

Both are perfectly reasonable choices.

The point isn’t that women over 50 need more undergarments. It’s that the right foundation can help clothing fit the way it was designed to fit.

Comfortable Shoes Can Still Be Stylish

There comes a wonderful point in life when you realize you no longer need to spend an entire evening pretending your feet aren’t killing you.

Fortunately, comfortable shoes have gotten much better looking.

Loafers, ballet flats, sleek sneakers, block heels, wedges, ankle boots and supportive sandals can all be stylish while allowing you to actually walk somewhere.

Think about your lifestyle before buying shoes.

If you spend most of your time traveling, walking, running errands or standing at events, a five-inch stiletto probably isn’t going to become the workhorse of your wardrobe no matter how beautiful it looked online.

That doesn’t mean you can’t own fabulous heels.

It means you may also want fabulous shoes that can make it from cocktails to dinner without requiring an emergency Uber.

Casual Style After 50

Casual doesn’t have to mean sloppy.

A pair of well-fitting jeans, a quality tee, a belt, sneakers, and a great jacket can look far more polished than an elaborate outfit that doesn’t fit properly.

This is also where accessories do a lot of heavy lifting. Sunglasses, earrings, a great handbag, a scarf or an interesting necklace can turn extremely simple clothing into an intentional outfit.

Athleisure also has its place. Leggings, elevated knitwear and sneakers aren’t limited to the gym anymore, and frankly, we’re not giving them back.

The trick is distinguishing between comfortable clothing and clothing you actually slept in.

Our Athleisure Wear for Women Over 50 guide is a good place to start.

Workwear After 50

Work wardrobes have changed dramatically.

Depending on where you work, the old uniform of matching suits and pumps may have been replaced by trousers, dresses, blazers, elevated denim and even sneakers.

The key is looking intentional.

A blazer remains one of the easiest ways to elevate an outfit. Throw one over jeans and a T-shirt and suddenly it looks like you had a plan.

For a modern work wardrobe, invest in versatile pieces you can mix rather than buying complete outfits that only work one way.

Trousers, blazers, simple dresses, sophisticated knitwear, loafers and structured handbags can move between meetings, dinners and everyday life far more easily than a closet full of traditional business suits.

What About Sleeveless Tops?

Wear them if you like them.

There seems to be a bizarre amount of discussion about whether women over 50 are “allowed” to show their arms.

You are.

If you’re uncomfortable showing your upper arms, however, there are plenty of options that don’t involve sweltering through summer in a cardigan.

Flutter sleeves, cap sleeves, elbow-length sleeves, sheer sleeves and lightweight layers can provide coverage without looking heavy.

But if you love a sleeveless dress, wear the sleeveless dress.

The world will recover.

Shorts After 50

Shorts seem to inspire almost as many arbitrary age rules as sleeveless tops.

Again, fit and proportion matter more than age.

If very short shorts aren’t your thing anymore, try a slightly longer inseam, tailored shorts, linen styles, Bermuda shorts or relaxed trouser shorts.

Pay attention to where the hem hits your leg. Sometimes moving it an inch or two makes an enormous difference.

And remember that shorts don’t have to be incredibly casual. A tailored pair with a blouse, belt and sandals can look remarkably polished.

Swimsuits After 50

Buying a swimsuit has probably never ranked among life’s most relaxing activities, and fluorescent dressing-room lighting certainly isn’t helping.

Instead of thinking about which parts of your body you need to hide, decide which features you’d like to emphasize.

Maybe you want support through the bust. Perhaps you prefer tummy control, adjustable straps, more coverage through the hips or a higher neckline.

Maybe you want a bikini because you’ve spent decades wearing one and have no intention of stopping.

Today’s swimwear gives us far more choices than the black one-piece that women over a certain age were once apparently issued.

Fit comes first. Confidence follows surprisingly quickly when you’re not tugging at your swimsuit every 30 seconds.

How to Wear Trends After 50

You don’t have to abandon trends, and you certainly don’t need to wear all of them. The easiest approach is to mix something current with pieces you already own.

If wide-leg jeans are having a moment, pair them with your favorite classic blouse. If metallic shoes are everywhere, use them to update a simple outfit.

If a particular color is trending and looks wonderful on you, wear it.

You don’t need to walk out of the house wearing six trends simultaneously to prove you’re fashionable. One or two modern elements can make an otherwise classic wardrobe feel completely current.

PrimeWomen regularly covers the trends worth considering, but the ultimate test is simple: Would you still like the item if nobody told you it was fashionable?

If the answer is no, leave it at the store.

Stop Saving Your Good Clothes

This is something many of us are guilty of.

We have the good blouse. The good handbag. The good shoes.

The good dress. And apparently we’re saving them for a future state dinner invitation that could arrive at any moment.

Wear your clothes. Carry the expensive handbag to lunch. Wear the beautiful blouse on a Tuesday.

Put on the earrings you’ve been saving.

Clothing doesn’t become more valuable sitting in a closet.

One of the great things about fashion after 50 is finally understanding that you don’t need an occasion to wear something that makes you feel fantastic.

How to Create Your Own Signature Style

The most stylish women aren’t necessarily wearing the most expensive clothing or the latest trends.

They simply look like themselves.

Maybe you’re known for beautiful scarves. Perhaps you love statement glasses, colorful shoes, dramatic earrings, crisp white shirts, monochromatic outfits or fabulous jackets.

Pay attention to the clothing that consistently makes you feel good. Then buy more strategically around it. This also makes shopping much easier.

Instead of asking, “Is this fashionable?” ask:

  • Does this look like me?
  • Does it work with what I already own?
  • Where would I wear it?
  • Does it fit the body I have today?
  • Would I buy it if it weren’t on sale?

That last question has saved me from some truly questionable purchases.

Fashion After 50 Isn’t About Looking Younger

The goal isn’t to dress like you’re 30. It isn’t to dress “your age,” either. The goal is to look like a stylish, confident version of you right now.

Your wardrobe should evolve because your life evolves. Maybe you travel more.

Maybe you’re working less. Maybe you’re dating again. Maybe you’re going to more weddings, playing with grandchildren, starting a new career, or finally spending money on yourself instead of everyone else.

Dress for that woman. Keep the pieces that still make you feel fabulous.

Update the ones that don’t. Experiment with trends when they’re fun. Ignore the ones that aren’t.

And if someone tells you women over 50 shouldn’t wear something? Unless that person is paying your credit card bill, we’re comfortable ignoring them.
