Sue Bird
The WNBA legend was born and raised in Syosset, New York. Bird attended Syosset High School before transferring to Christ the King Regional High School in Queens.
Bird was selected first overall by the Seattle Storm in the 2002 WNBA draft. The 14-time All-Star has led the franchise to four WNBA Championships — in 2004, 2010, 2018 and 2020.
The 41-year-old has also led the United States to Olympic gold medals on five occasions — in 2004, 2008, 2012, 2016 and 2020. The WNBA all-time assist leader is a lock for the Basketball Hall of Fame in her first year of eligibility.

The 40-year-old Williams hasn’t won a Grand Slam tournament since the 2017 Australian Open, as injuries have limited her playing time over the last two years.
Williams reached the 2019 US Open finals but fell to Canadian Bianca Andreescu. She unfortunately had to withdraw from the 2020 French Open with an Achilles injury, and Williams has also dealt with leg and shoulder injuries.
But if she can get healthy, the tennis icon will have every opportunity to match and potentially break Court’s record of 24. Even if she doesn’t win another major, Williams’ legacy as an all-time great athlete and tennis player is already set.
Kendall Coyne Schofield
Coyne has already established herself as one of the greatest women’s hockey players ever, and she’s still in the prime years of her playing career.
Coyne’s contributions in women’s hockey go well beyond her performance on the ice. In 2020, the Palos Heights, Illinois native was hired by the Chicago Blackhawks to serve as a player development coach for their AHL affiliate, the Rockford IceHogs.
She also competed in the fastest skater competition at the 2019 NHL All-Star weekend in San Jose, California. This made Coyne the first woman to ever compete at the NHL All-Star festivities.
Coyne was instrumental in helping the United States win six IIHF World Women’s Championships over a nine-year span: In 2011, 2013, 2015, 2016, 2017 and most recently 2019.
She was also a member of the 2014, 2018 and 2022 Olympic teams. Coyne won a gold medal with the U.S. in 2018 — their first in women’s hockey since 1998 — as well as silver medals in the 2014 and 2022 games.
Simone Biles
The pride of Columbus, Ohio already might be the best gymnast to ever walk the face of the earth, and she isn’t even close to retirement.
Only eight women have won more Olympic medals than Biles (seven). She is also just one of 10 women gymnasts to have won at least four medals at the Olympic games — with all of them coming at the 2016 games in Rio de Janeiro.
Biles has also racked u p 19 gold medal wins at the World Artistic Gymnastics Championships, to go along with three bronze and three silver medals apiece at the games.
Megan Rapinoe
The soon-to-be 37-year-old Rapinoe remains one of the top women’s soccer players in the world, and she’s far from done writing her legacy.
Rapinoe was a vital member of the United States women’s soccer teams that won gold at the 2012 London Olympics as well as the 2015 and 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cups. Rapinoe also led the U.S. to consecutive CONCACAF Women’s Championships in 2014 and 2018.
Rapinoe was named The Best FIFA Women’s Player in 2019, finishing ahead of runner-up and longtime national squad teammate Alex Morgan. Rapinoe and Carli Lloyd (2016) are the first two Americans to have won the honors.
The soccer icon plays for the OL Reign of the National Women’s Soccer League. The Reign finished as league runner-ups in 2014 and 2015, but with Rapinoe still playing at a high level, perhaps it’s only a matter of time until the franchise captures its first championship.
