Strawberry Agua Fresca

This Strawberry Agua Fresca is a beautiful, healthy, fruity beverage that offers just the right thirst-quenching taste for any occasion, from picnics and outdoor parties, to after school hydration and weeknight dinner tables.

What is agua fresca?

The light, fresh tradition of agua fresca (literally “fresh water”) originates from Central America. You might have seen large containers of fruit-filled waters at Mexican restaurants as your first exposure to agua fresca. And you should really give these flavorful, thirst-quenching beverages a try!

While I’m not a true expert on Mexican and Central American foodways, I encourage you to check out the work of fellow dietitian Alice Figueroa to learn more about these healthful, beautiful food traditions. The concept of icy water, filled with a touch of lime juice and chopped fresh fruit is a welcome, delicious way to hydrate, without the need for added sugars.

Just mix up a batch of this Strawberry Agua Fresca recipe in the blender, and keep it chilled in the refrigerator to enjoy as a healthful beverage any night of the week. It’s also delicious and pretty as can be served in pitchers or large jars filled with ice at picnics and open-air parties.

An agua fresca recipe can feature a variety of fruits. And try swapping the strawberries out for other seasonal fruit choices, including pineapple, mangos, kiwis, papayas, blueberries, or peaches. And if you don’t have fresh strawberries in season, substitute frozen.
